NUGS Has Lost Its Relevance – Hon. Agyarko, MP For Ayawaso West Wuogon
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Hon. Emmanuel Agyarko has bemoaned the current state of students’ movement and leadership in the country particularly the leadership of National Union of Ghana students (NUGS), the mother body of all students’ associations in Ghana.
Currently, two people are claiming to be the President of NUGS, a situation Hon Agyarko expressed worry about.
“To me when you do this, you lose relevance. Today, I don’t think that NUGS means much,” the MP told students at a handing over ceremony of University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
According to him, there has been a major shift in student movement and leadership from what he knew several years ago when he was a student at UST, now KNUST.
He noted that politicians will always seek advantage and advised the students not to succumb to pressures from the politicians.
“You have utmost divine duty to ensure that at any point in time, there is a voice in the wilderness like the biblical voice in the wilderness,” he said.
He appealed the student to stick to the aims and objectives of whichever student organization they want to lead and seek the interest of the people they lead.
In his acceptance speech, the new President of USAG, Mr Emmanuel Kwarteng Frimpong expressed worry over the state of their mother union, NUGS as it poses a threat to students’ activism.
According to him, the Union has been reduced to springboard for career politicians. He vowed not to let any individual to divide the students’ front along any sectional lines.
“The students of Ghana determined to give vision and purpose to themselves conceived and gave birth to this association, USAG. A purpose of improving the quality of education to promote personal and national development, very unfortunately, we have allowed ourselves to be divided along our purpose with the notion that we belong to different sectional lines. But then this time, on this same issue of purpose, we cannot, we must not and we will not allow any individual to divide the students front along any sectional lines,” the President said.
He pledged to keep his oath of office and serve the people who elected him and his colleagues into office in a high measure of humility and dignity.
He also commended the Nkosuo-led administration for their immense contribution to the growth of the association especially on advocacy.
